AGRONOMICAL ATTRIBUTES OF SOYBEANS AND SOIL RESISTANCE TO PENETRATION IN NO-TILLAGE AND CHISELED SURFACES REA
Cortez,Jorge W.; Mauad,Munir; Souza,Luiz C. F. de; Rufino,Mauricio V.; Souza,Paulo H. N. de.
ABSTRACT Farming systems may affect soil properties and crop production of components, decreasing yields. This study aimed to assess penetration resistance (PR) and agronomic traits of soybeans under no-tillage (NT) and chiseling (CP). The experiment was carried out in a randomized block with two treatments (tillage and scarification) with 12 repetitions; yet soil penetration resistance (PR) was assessed in a factorial block, considering farming systems and sampling sites (row and interrows). PR was measured with an impact penetrometer, sampling in row and interrows within a 22.5 x 0.1 m2 mesh grid up to 0.60 m depth. The obtained values were higher for NT in the 0.10-0.20 m layer. Great PR values in interrows were only registered within the surface layer....

Mome Filho,Edison Aparecido; Silva,Alvaro Pires da; Figueiredo,Getulio Coutinho; Gimenes,Fernando Henrique Setti; Vitti,André Cesar.
Modern agriculture techniques have a great impact on crops and soil quality, especially by the increased machinery traffic and weight. Several devices have been developed for determining soil properties in the field, aimed at managing compacted areas. Penetrometry is a widely used technique; however, there are several types of penetrometers, which have different action modes that can affect the soil resistance measurement. The objective of this study was to compare the functionality of two penetrometry methods (manual and automated mode) in the field identification of compacted, highly mechanized sugarcane areas, considering the influence of soil water volumetric content (θ) on soil penetration resistance (PR). Three sugarcane fields on a Rhodic Eutrudrox...

Estimation of precompression stress in an Ultisol cultivated with sugarcane AGRIAMBI
Mendes,Pericles M. B.; Rolim,Mário M.; Lima,Renato P. de; Pedrosa,Elvira M. R.; Tavares,Uilka E.; Simões Neto,Djalma E..
ABSTRACT Compressive soil properties are typically used for the understanding of compaction process. As an alternative to laboratory tests, pedo-transfer functions have been used to estimate the mechanical behaviour of soil as a function of soil physical parameters. The impact of soil bulk density (BD) and gravimetric water content (w) was examined on soil strength and pedo-transfer functions were proposed to predict the precompression stress (σp) in an Ultisol cultivated with sugarcane. Undisturbed soil cores were sampled at the depths of 0-0.20 and 0.20-0.40 m, subjected to different water contents, and subsequently, compression tests were performed to determine σp. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and regression analysis. Bulk density and...

Evaluation of corn planter under travel speed, working depth, pressure wheel and cone index CIGR Journal
Khodaei, Mehdi.
Compaction is one of the restricting factors in desirable seed germination and root growth. As a sign for soil compaction can be a criterion for optimal seed germination. Seeds require some compression of the surrounding soil at planting for optimum growth, which it is made by pressure wheels in planters. Travel speed and working depth affect the soil cone index. A field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the speed and working depth in the beginning of the autumn season. Experiments were performed in the form of factorial split-plot based on a randomized complete block design with two factors, the travel speed (3, 4, and 6 km/h) and working depth (3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 cm) in three replication. Digital cone Penetrometer was used for...

GPS receivers for georeferencing of spatial variability of soil attributes REA
Rosalen,David L; Rodrigues,Marcos S; Chioderoli,Carlos A; Brandão,Flavia J. C; Siqueira,Diego S.
The characterization of the spatial variability of soil attributes is essential to support agricultural practices in a sustainable manner. The use of geostatistics to characterize spatial variability of these attributes, such as soil resistance to penetration (RP) and gravimetric soil moisture (GM) is now usual practice in precision agriculture. The result of geostatistical analysis is dependent on the sample density and other factors according to the georeferencing methodology used. Thus, this study aimed to compare two methods of georeferencing to characterize the spatial variability of RP and GM as well as the spatial correlation of these variables. Sampling grid of 60 points spaced 20 m was used. For RP measurements, an electronic penetrometer was used...

Implications of the variability in soil penetration resistance for statistical analysis Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Gubiani,Paulo Ivonir; Reichert,José Miguel; Reinert,Dalvan José; Gelain,Neiva Somavilla.
Soil penetration resistance (PR) is a measure of soil compaction closely related to soil structure and plant growth. However, the variability in PR hampers the statistical analyses. This study aimed to evaluate the variability of soil PR on the efficiency of parametric and nonparametric analyses in indentifying significant effects of soil compaction and to classify the coefficient of variation of PR into low, medium, high and very high. On six dates, the PR of a typical dystrophic Red Ultisol under continuous no-tillage for 16 years was measured. Three tillage and/or traffic conditions were established with the application of: (i) no chiseling or additional traffic, (ii) additional compaction, and (iii) chiseling. On each date, the nineteen PR data...

Interpretation of the stiffness and permeability of Sand-Kaolin mixtures in the framework of homogenization Anais da ABC (AABC)
Boutin,Claude; Kacprzak,Gregory; Doanh,Thiep.
This study deals with the behaviour of mixtures of sand and saturated kaolin paste considered as composite materials made of permeable and deformable (with non-linear behaviour) matrix (the kaolin paste) with rigid and impervious inclusions (the sand grains). Oedometric and permeability tests conducted on such mixtures highlight the key role of the state of the clay paste, and show the existence of a threshold of sand grain concentration above which a structuring effect influences both modulus and permeability. At the light of these experiments, the usual and tangent homogenization process (with simplifying assumptions to make the problem manageable) has been applied to estimate the mixture permeability and tangent compressibility. Qualitative and...
